Vox's clean/overdrive/distortion seems to be smoother, silkier in some ways, while Marshall is bolder and punchier. That said, each of the "early" models have similar yet notably different characteristics - similar in harmonic richness, but slightly different in how they feel. When I speak of "gain" I'm not necessarily talking about "distortion", since even a clean, chimey tone requires a certain amount of "push" to let the harmonics shine. There are several "tone eras" for each, so any comparison would require knowing which one we're talking about, but if you're referring to earlier versions then, "generally" speaking, to me it's the gain structure and how each breaks up at the point of clipping which defines their tone.
